There are 2 general kinds of boom lifts. These units are straight boom lifts and articulated boom lifts. Usually, these units are powered hydraulically. Most often straight booms are the great choice for tasks which require a high reach with no obstructions. The turntable on the machinery is capable of rotating three hundred sixty degrees with an extendable boom. This extendable boom is able to be vertically raised to below horizontal. Because the operator is able to steer and maneuver the vehicle while the boom is completely extended, it is a versatile machine. These models are available in gas, diesel or propane configurations as well as 4 wheel drive and 2 wheel drive.
The articulated boom lifts are utilized for jobs which require to reach up and over obstacles so as to gain access. These specialized lifts are used for jobs which are not easily completed by straight telescopic booms. These lifts are practically like the straight boom lift in most aspects except in the boom's ability to articulate. There are various articulation points on the boom in order to enable it to bend in a range of different directions allowing it to move around any objects easily within the work site.
Some heavy-duty boom lifts come outfitted with outriggers in order to maintain stability while the boom lift is completely extended. The outriggers provide the operator with some extra safety and confidence. Proper training is required prior to using boom lifts in order to ensure the jobsite, the operator and everyone working in the vicinity stays safe.
Boom lifts enable jobs that used to require a lot more man power to be completed in a much shorter time period. These machines have greatly increased productivity and have changed the material handling industry.
