Lift Truck Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts should be charged regularly and correctly maintained. Safety procedures should always be followed when connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
It is vital for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The best way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place must be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the station should not be obstructed and an employee who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger and battery must be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never allow objects like for example matches or lighters to be used while an employee is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging area well ventilated. The recharging method could cause fumes to be released. These gases are both explosive and poisonous.
