The town of High River is situated within southwestern Alberta, and currently boasts a population of nearly 11,000 residents. The town of High River is just south of Calgary by roughly 37 kilometres or 23 miles, and sits at the crossroads of the 2 and 23 Highways. Even though somewhat far from Calgary, the town of High River is nevertheless considered to be part of the Calgary Area.
The Highwood River that flows through the town is where the High River gets its name. The river will usually flood in the springtime.
Former Canadian Prime Minister Joe Clark was born within the town of High River. Other famous former citizens include W.O. Mitchell, author of such books as Roses Are Difficult Here and Who Has Seen the Wind, and WHA and NHL hockey player John "Pie" McKenzie.
High River was used as a set for Smallville in Superman III, as well as High River, Montana in Nickelodeon's series Caitlin's Way. Recently, Heartland, a CBC television series has found High River its main filming spot. What's more, the movie Carolina Moon based on the book by Nora Roberts was filmed within High River.
As part of High River's tourism and heritage endeavours, some murals were painted all-around town in the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s. High River hosted the World Professional Chuckwagon Association Dodge Pro Tour Championships during the year 2006 and 2010.
There was a tree that stood beside the existing town site of High River which was known as the Medicine Tree. It was created through a natural grafting that happened between two cottonwood trees, when the branch of one grew into the trunk of the other.
The indigenous peoples, specifically the Blackfoot and Stony, considered this to be a sign from the Spirits which the spot was favoured. It was also near the Medicine Tree which traders determined to build a fort, and soon after settlers came to claim the land that is now High River.
The High River Culture Centre was designed to become a great venue which was able to meet the needs of the local community, providing several programs, activities, and special events for the residents. Programs are meant for various ages and are meant to expose the local community to a wide variety of opportunities.
The Culture Centre contains a large studio which is utilized for various activities like for instance classes in the arts, dance, and music, and general interest in addition to wellness and health courses.
