It is much more complicated to drive a forklift than to drive a car. The forklift driver has to have the necessary skills and receive special training to operate a lift truck. A high level of concentration is required to operate a lift truck. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration reports that 85 individuals die in accidents related to forklifts every year year. About 35,000 individuals are injured each and every year in accidents related to lift trucks. Nearly 50 percent of operator deaths result from a forklift tip over.

Drivers need to be able to accurately estimate the weight of a load in order to prevent the equipment from tipping over. The load weight in construction environments will usually be posted on the load. If a concrete block weighs 16 kilograms, and the load consists of cubes containing 90 concrete blocks, the whole load weight would be roughly 1,360 kilograms. When a load is wet, the operator should take more weight into account.

It could be unsafe if the operator makes poorly informed estimates as the loads actual weight and whether the equipment could handle the load. If an operator cannot be sure about the weight of a load, he must ask for assistance from the supervisor.

Failure to pull up near enough to a building or lift a load using an extended boom can be one more cause of tip overs. To avoid tipping lift truck, it is essential to use the load chart. Even if a forklift does not really tip over, an accident has happened whenever the back wheels come off the ground. This means the forklift limitations have been exceeded. Even if damage might not be obvious, the rear axle could have been broken when hitting the ground.

Forklifts can even tip when not carrying a load. An unloaded forklift could tip if a driver has placed a load on scaffolding using an extended boom. If the operator reverses the lift truck and turns abruptly whilst bringing the boom down, the center of gravity would be pushed to the edges of the forklift and a tip over could take place. A driver should always utilize the joysticks to be able to retract and lower the fork.
